The dog, the myth, the legend: Blue Bear passed away on Saturday, May 23rd, 2009. He was 14 years old.

Blue Bear

Blue Bear

Blue Bear arrived at Best Friends at around the age of one and quickly set about establishing a reputation as one of the toughest customers on the property. Fighting earned him a roughed up face, a split ear and the loss of a leg in an accident more than a decade ago. Caregivers who have been around for a while have told me outlandish stories – that he would attack his caregivers if he wasn’t the first in his run to be fed, and that he would pass his time with the dog in the run next to his taking turns grabbing each others’ lips through the fence and pulling – for fun.

I didn’t know any of this when I became a caregiver and began to care for Blue Bear, who was at that point 13 years old and in failing health. He needed twice-daily medical baths because he was incontinent, which I was taught to do after muzzling him for protection. After a while when we had built a trust, I stopped using the muzzle and never went back – I never had a problem bathing him, although he didn’t like me to do it with strangers watching. He was a proud, stoic old man, but he also had a very affectionate side to him – he would eventually roll over for belly rubs for me and loved chin scratches. By that point in his life he was having some trouble walking, so instead I would lift him into my golf cart and take him on rides around the property so he could see and be seen with the wind in his face, resting on my lap. In his old age, Bluey had discovered human companionship, affection, and love.

Bluey still had the old spark, though – 13 years old, weak and incontinent as he was, he laid down the rules in his run. A quiet growl of disapproval from the Blue Bear was all it took for his canine companions to drop their shenanigans and leave him alone. If he was feeling particularly spirited that day and he felt I had slighted or ignored him, he might mount an attack on my shoes when I entered his run. Affectionate as he could be, he still commanded respect from both people and dogs wherever he went.

At the end of last year, his health started to take a serious turn for the worse and we were afraid he would not survive the winter with us – our facility was no longer suitable for his needs. We scrambled to find a solution and eventually he was transferred to Dogtown Heights, to a building with extended caregiver hours that had a setup better suited to him. He thrived there, quickly becoming a favorite of his new caregivers, who doted on him. It was there that his caregiver Paul had the idea of getting him an all-terrain wagon so that he could once again go on walks in the company of other dogs, which he loved.

By the beginning of May his health had declined to the point where his quality of life was seriously affected and he had run out of treatment options. The decision was made to let him go, and he peacefully crossed the Rainbow Bridge surrounded by friends and former caregivers who loved him dearly.

Blue Bear never let a day go by that he didn’t grab in his teeth and shake everything possible from. To the end he remained a proud, determined and independent-minded dog. I and many others loved him, and he will be sorely missed. Goodbye, Old Warrior. We will not forget you.

Rest In Peace~Toshie

Toshie crossed the rainbow bridge yesterday. It was a very teary day for us who love her so dearly. Toshie was a Leukemia positive cat and she had been having severe respiratory problems for a while now. She had been nebulized, but it didn’t seem to help. Her little body just wasn’t able to support her anymore. She stopped eating and was not feeling or doing well.

This little girl was loved immensely. She was a staple for all that visited Cal-Mar, it was always a must to go and visit the paper shredding Toshie. I know she is now surrounded by all the paper she could ever want to shred.

Toshie we love you and you will be deeply missed.
Rest in Peace, sweet girl.

Bonita and Carissa

I feel such sadness telling you all this news. Bonita passed away two days ago. She went in for a dental and didn’t make it through the procedure. This has been extremely hard on everyone and many tears have been shed. The person that hurts the most is Bonita’s favorite caregiver, Carissa. It is amazing how much support this community gives when one needs it the most. Bonita was such an amazing spirit who went through so much in her life. There is comfort in knowing how much she was loved these last few months with us. She never spent a day alone or without a hug.
Bonita we miss you dearly and there are tears still shed for you. Run free and know you were loved more words can say.
Rest in Peace, sweet girl.

Sir Chance~RIP

Friend, please don’t mourn for me,
I’m still here, though you don’t see.
I’m right by your side each night and day,
And within your heart I long to stay.
My body is gone but I’m always near,
I’m everything you feel, see or hear.
My spirit is free, but I’ll never depart,
As long as you keep me alive in your heart.
I’ll never wander out of your sight.
I’m the brightest star on a summer night.
I’ll never be beyond your reach…

Nadas(RIP)

Nadas is such a cool dog and incredibly handsome! He has such a silly reason for being at the sanctuary, but a reason that means he can never leave. He chased a horse in Oregon and they were immediately going to put him to sleep. Apparently, that is a no-no in that state. Thank goodness Best Friends was able to take him and happily so. He has the mellowest demeanor and he is just calming and nice to hang out with. I would imagine if he were a person, he would live in an old castle surrounded by books. He would hang out in a robe and do crossword puzzles and drink hot tea outside on the deck. haha! This is my image of Nadas as a human. He sounds pretty cool!

He is such a big guy, too. I love giving him hugs and I could scratch his back for hours, because his coat is so soft, plus he will gaze at you with those amazing eyes, he knows just how to get his way. He loves friends; send some love his way!

I went to visit Katy Doodle and strangely as I walk in the door, I feel like I have walked into the musical West Side Story. Katy must have been “feeling pretty” as she delicately eeked her way into song, give her a hat, kitty wig and petticoat and call her Maria Doodle…prancing her way around her stage tree, thrusting her head back as if the kitty crowd was roaring for more.

katy doodle

She adores the attention and being the delicate diva that she is…the boys just love her, as the feeling is mutual. She does have quite the fan club and today there was no shortage of love, hence her impromptu kitty chorus, but that is Katy Doodle, always giving the Kitty club entertainment for the masses. oh! and catnip presents preferred.

UPDATE: Katy Doodle left us to cross the Rainbow Bridge on 11/29/08. She had not been feeling well for a very long time, but she kept her spirits high and stayed with us for as long as she could. We will miss her dearly. She was loved by so many people, but I am so grateful to have known such an amazing spirit.
We miss you my friend. Rest in Peace.

Aurora~Rest in Peace

On Wednesday November 5, 2008, we lost a very dear friend. Aurora passed away.

She was one of those spirits that imprinted on my heart and she never left my mind. I adored her, despite all her weird quarks. I loved her spunk. Her most favorite thing in the world was to go to the dog park and play ball. She LOVED playing, running and jumping in the water for the ball. She was too smart for her own good. There are dozens of balls scattered everywhere on the ground at the park and she will find and bring back the ONE ball that is thrown just for her.

Yesterday, she was rushed to the clinic and immediately put under for surgery. Something was terribly wrong. When they opened her up, she was just filled with tumors and one had burst causing her stomach to bloat with fluid. She didn’t make it through the surgery. She passed on.

My heart hurts deeply for her, my eyes have wept until there were no more tears, but I know the heavens hold her and she is okay. She is running free with her friends and I am sure surrounded by balls.
I loved her immensely and I know others felt the same way. It was a pleasure to have known such a spunky girl and I know she will never be forgotten.
In her passing, I hope that people will do something wonderful for another animal in her honor. Whether it be giving a hug, donating a toy, money or time to an animal in need.

Aurora, you were loved and will be dearly missed.
